Industrial heritage meets modernity.

Since its construction in 2006, the SANAA building has been considered an architectural masterpiece with a groundbreaking energy concept. Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa consider it one of their most important buildings.

In the Capital of Culture year 2010, both architects received the Pritzker Prize – the world’s highest award for architects – for this building, among others. It is located in the middle of the Ruhr region in Essen on the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zeche Zollverein.

The SANAA building in Essen breaks the architectural grid of the former industrial buildings and combines heritage with modernity. The 34-meter-high building has a footprint of 35 x 35 meters. The internal structure is unique, consisting of five levels – four stories plus a roof terrace – each with different room heights.

The 134 window openings appear to be randomly arranged, but are precisely coordinated with the lighting situation inside. They act like frames that make the surroundings appear as momentary cutouts.

Since January 2010, the SANAA building has been used by the Folkwang University of the Arts for representative purposes, lectures, theory classes, and symposia and congresses. It is also the new home of the Folkwang designers with the three study programs Photography, Communication Design and Industrial Design. The Folkwang Agency also rents out the SANAA building to companies and institutions as a high-quality event location.

SANAA building is a perfectly equipped event location. All the furniture in the SANAA building has been specially selected and assembled for use in the premises.

Chairs, tables, cabinets, seating groups and lighting elements bear the signature of international designers such as Marten van Severen, Charles & Ray Eames, Arne Jacobsen, Antonio Citterio and Brunner Design.
